Question 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

'Lionsgate' is appropriate for our film distribution. We chose this particular institution because of its success and popularity. We felt it would be the best for our film because it has distributed popular, action packed films in the past. Such as:
  • The Hunger Games
  • Saw
  • The Expendables
  • Kick- Ass
  • Twilight
  • Texas Chainsaw
  • Abduction
  • Warrior
  • Enders Game
  • The Last Stand

Question 5. How did you attract/address your audience?

How did you attract/address your target audience One way in which we attracted our audience was through the use of enigma. We tried not to give too much away to make the audience ask questions such as:

Who are the two boys?
Why is one of them homeless?
How are they connected?
What happens next?

Use of Characters
The two characters that we used are roughly the same age as the target audience which will help attract the audience because they can relate to both characters and will make them picture what it would be like to be homeless and feel sympathy for this boy.

The Title
Our title "Fighting to Survive" will attract the target audience because they will see the word "Fighting" and they will instantly know that the film is an action film and that it will have some sort of fighting scenes in the film. Whereas it will also attract the older audience because they will see the word "survive" which will give the feel of some emotional storyline which takes place in the film which will attract them to the drama use in the film, which will attract a much wider audience.

Poster
Another way in which we have attract our target audience is by the two posters that we have created for the film. As you can see by both our posters that we have used symbolic boxing images such as boxing gloves and the boxing ring this will relate to the target audience because they will see the whole sporty theme to the film and will know instantly that its about boxing and will encourage them to watch the film. Also it will attract our secondary audience because we have used dark colours such as black to show the whole drama side to the film and putting the gloves in colour and having the light on them to give the impression of hope being portrayed throughout the film with boxing being the key to this hope.

Marketing
The marketing campaign is vey important for the film because it is the only way in getting the target audience attention. One method that we can use is by producing a trailer which will give the audience an idea of what the film is about and if done well could attract them into coming to watch the film. Another way of marketing that we could use is by putting it out on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, this would help us attract our target audience because our main audience is teenagers who are most likely to use these sites which will allow us to promote our product to the target audience but will also get a much wider spectrum of audience because these sites are used all over the world.

Question 4.Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our target audience is mainly male orientated, who are in the age range of between 15 and 21. This is because the characters in the film are roughly in the same age group at the begginig so they can relate to the film but also because its an action film it appeals more to teenage boys then any other age range group.

They will be interested in sport so the whole boxing action genre will appeal to their sporty views which will attract them into watching the film. But it can also relate to older people and a female audience because there is a lot of drama and emotional scenes which will relate to this type of audience.

Looking into similar types of films that relate to the same target audience (Warrior, Rocky), both these films relate to ours and the target audiences because they both have the actions scenes needed to relate to the younger generations such as teens to keep them interested in the film. but also both have the drama side which draws in older people and the female audience who like a bit of drama in their film. This helped us understand how to relate to our target audience because we understood that the openingt had to have some action in but also it had to get across the emotional storyline which helped us increase the size of our target audience.

After our first draft of the film we had a mixed response on if the target audience was clear because some people found it clear where as others didn't find it so clear, to fix this issue raised we decided to add more hints about what the film was about such as the boxing gloves being a main prop in certain shots this allowed us to relate to our main target audience because they will know it is a boxing film and will draw them into the film.

Question 7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Question 6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

When making the Product we used a variation of software’s for example Prezi, Microsoft Power Point, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premier and Audacity. We used PowerPoint first when we made our film ideas which made it easier to pitch to the class and to keep them interested.

We also Used Prezi which is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint but its online and provides a simpler way to make presentations but kept crashing when we used it online which caused some problems. I used it to keep our work interesting and easier to read through because of its simplicity. I had never used this before so I had to learn how to use it but it didn’t take long because it is simple.

Adobe Premier was the used for editing the opening scene and enabled me to make the titles to move with what the characters were doing which improved the opening scene and allowed me to customise the titles to add originality for example the shadow on the text. Adobe Premier also allowed me to cut the clips so they would change exactly when I wanted them to which I wouldn't be able to do on other soft wares. As I had never used Adobe Premier before I had to look up some tutorials on the Internet which caused the editing to take longer than if I used a software I'm more familiar with but the end product wouldn't have looked as professional as I wouldn't have had the tools I needed. I was also able to turn the sound off on certain clips when you could hear directing or sounds that just didn't fit which made it sound much more professional. I was also able to turn the sound down so it didn't overpower the song in the background which was the most important.

I used Adobe Photoshop to make the posters for Fighting to Survive. I used it because I had used it before so I didn't have to learn a new software and because of the tools the software has on it. I was able to put a picture of some gloves hanging on a brick wall and blur it black round the edge so they were centred in the middle and made it look like the light was shining on the gloves. I was also able to add the custom text from premier on the poster because they are both adobe adding consistency throughout our work. I was also able to find a similar text to the ones on the bottom of movie posters so it looked more professional. I wouldn’t be able to do this with other photo editors for example Paint because they didn’t have the tools required but Adobe Photoshop is difficult to use which is why some people chose not to use it but I had used it before so I already knew how to use it.

We also used Audacity to record my voice over of our storyboard. Audacity was easy to use and export which is why it was a no brainer for me to use it. It was important for our voice over because it is free to download and records you voice with very good quality.

Budget for fighting to survive

We think the budget for the film would be around £150,000 so we could hire the gym and pay for the crew to record it and for special effects so when the fight happens in the film it looks as realistic as possible. This would also cover the cost of the cast.

Changes from the original idea

We have Changed many things throughout Fighting to survive but we have kept the base story the same of a Rich boy and Poor boy getting up to go to their boxing club. We changed a few scenes for example stealing some food from a store because it would be too difficult and you would need permission for the store but we still didn't think we could make it realistic. We also cut out the part where ben got into his car because we thought it would effect the link between Jack and Ben. Jack also didn't wake up on the bench because we wanted to show that he did have a sleeping bag and was recently homeless. We also had to make a improvisation on the mirror shot because people didn't want us recording while they went to the toilet which is understandable. We also decided that Jack wasn't going into the charity shop because we wanted to show he was recently homeless and the chances of boxing gloves being in there was slim. We also decided we wasn't going to an actual boxing gym as we wanted it to be a back ally boxing club so we used one of the doors in the school round the back to show this.

Storyboard

This is Jack explaining what is happening in each scene of the storyboard, and the type of shots we planned on using.

Fighting to survive interveiws

Jack Interviewed some classmates to find out their opinion on what they thought was the:
  • best scene
  • worst scene
  • what they thought about the editing
  • how well was the acting done and
  • what they would give it out of 60

Location

Chelmsford City Centre: this is where we will film the chase scene and the rich boy meeting up with his mate. The busy atmosphere will give the affect of how no one gives any sympathy for the poor boy and allows him to get chased.

Central Parke Chelmsford: This is where the poor homless boy will wake up and the scenes to follow that will be filmed. This area is nice to look at and will give the affect of how different the boy is and that he doesn't really belong.

This is where most of the rich boy scenes will be filmed of him waking up and his daily routine, the house we chose is a normal looking house which will give the impression of how normal this boys life is.

Great Baddow High School: This is where our final scene will be shot of the two boys walking into the boxing club entrance.

Question 2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents teenagers, poor people and rich people. Teenagers are represented through the two main characters because of their age. They are both 17 years old.

Poor people are represented though Jack’s character, because of the way he is presented in the film, such as sleeping on the floor in a park, poor clothing and no home.

Rich people are represented through Ben’s character, because of the way he is presented. For example, he lives in a nice house, he eats at a table with food made for him and he owns his own gym equipment.

Their characters also represent the differences in popularity and emotion. In the film, Ben is shown being happy and content, and meets some friends; whereas Jack is sad, on his own, and gets chased by a gang of boys.

Jack’s character’s background is presented as a rough upbringing in the opening scene, and represents the lower class; Ben’s character’s background is presented as an easy upbringing. He represents the upper class.

The overall representation is the contrast between the two characters, which is shown through their personal presentation, and how different their lives are to each other.
